Description      ETS was contracted by U.S.A.I.D. to develop and perform a two-week training program in Brazil on the subject of "Air Pollution Control Technologies for the Electric Power Utility Industry". The participants in this course included engineers and scientists from the Brazilian electric power utility industry, as well as representatives from the Brazilian federal and state environmental regulatory agencies. The first week of the course focused on particulate emissions control technologies, the advantages and disadvantages of each, the relative economics of each, and the operations and maintenance issues of each. The second week of the course focused on gaseous emissions controls, particularly SO2 and NOx emissions. The same criteria were discussed for each of these technologies as were discussed for particulate-control technologies. Additional discussions were presented on the subjects of emissions testing and dispersion modeling.


U.S. Agency for International Development - India

Description      ETS was contracted by U.S.A.I.D. to represent the United States, along with the U.S. Ambassador, at an Associated Chambers of Commerce meeting in Delhi, India, on the subject of air pollution management in India. ETS personnel trained those in attendance on the general subject of the implementation of government regulatory programs, and on the technology available to support such regulations in developing programs.


Air and Waste Management Association

Description      QEP Exam Training: The Environmental Practice Review Course was designed by ETS, and provided under contract to AWMA. The objective of the course was to provide professionals working in the environmental field with a vehicle to prepare for the QEP exam. Included among the environmental science management and policy topics covered were:

  • Environmental Science Fundamentals
  • Characterizing Human Health and Ecological Conditions
  • Impact Assessment
  • Risk Management Issues
  • Global Issues
  • Environmental Management Principles and Practices
  • Public Policy Developments and Implementation
  • Environmental Economics (Risk and Cost/Benefit Analysis)
  • Importance of Public Information/Community Relations


Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC)

Description      ETS was contracted by SABIC to perform a one-week training program in Saudi Arabia for the Environmental Engineering staff of the various operating companies of SABIC, on the general subject of "Air Pollution Control Technology and Emissions Estimation Procedures". The first half of this training course described the basic theory and applicability of different air pollution control devices for solid and gaseous emissions, as well as a basic overview of the operations and maintenance issues associated with each. The second half of the training program was dedicated to the subject of emissions estimation, and the development of emission factors. This training involved the use of readily available emission factors, the proper application of material balances for different operations, the value and applicability of emissions testing, and the development of site-specific, and source-specific emission factors for unique operations. The industries focused upon during this training program included petrochemical, steel, cement, fertilizer, and polymers and resins.


Air Pollution Control Technologies Course

Description      The "Air Pollution Control Technologies Course" was designed to provide comprehensive practical training to senior technical personnel from industry and government agencies. The objectives of the course were to train participants to be able to:

  • determine needs and feasibility of air pollution control at industrial and utility plants
  • select among competing technologies
  • size, specify and procure equipment
  • supervise installation, operations and maintenance of environmental controls.

The course was divided into the following study modules:

  • Introduction
  • Control of Particulate Emissions
  • Gaseous Control - VOCs
  • Gaseous Control - Non-VOCs
  • Regulatory and Permitting Policies
  • Program Management.

Modules consisted of five days of lecture and problem-solving activities, with the exception of the Program Management module, which ran for two days. Attendees were provided with workbooks for the specific training modules they attended. In addition, each attendee was provided the course textbook Air Pollution Control Equipment: Selection, Design, Operation, and Maintenance, published by ETS.

ETS Baghouse Technical Information Pocket Guide

Description      A pocket-sized baghouse troubleshooting guide was developed by ETS. The purpose of this manual is to help fabric filter maintenance people to pinpoint operation and maintenance problems they encounter during daily operations of a baghouse. This pocket manual begins by defining the basic operating parameters of the baghouse. It discusses and gives examples of basic operating calculations including pressure drop, drag coefficient and gas-to-cloth ratios. Recommendations for proper bag installation, fabric selection, gas-to-cloth ratios, collector type selections and basic design objectives are also included. Also included and discussed are tables that list manufacturer's responsibilities, maintenance checklists and a detailed troubleshooting guide. The manual concludes with other helpful information such as a sulfuric acid dewpoint chart and a complete glossary of fabric filter terms.

APTI Course SI:428A, Introduction to Boiler Operation

Description      ETS prepared a self-instructional training course for the Environmental Protection Agency, Air Pollution Training Institute (APTI). This course, APTI course SI:428A, "Introduction to Boiler Operation", is designed for engineers and other technical personnel responsible for inspecting boilers and issuing operating permits. The course focuses on the major components of boilers and how boilers operate to produce steam for industrial processes, to heat buildings, or to generate electricity. Major topics include: fire-tube and water-tube boilers, combustion efficiency, supplying air and fuel for gas-fired, oil-fired, and coal-fired boilers (underfeed, overfeed, and spreader stokers, pulverized coal-fired units, and fluidized-bed units), boiler operation and maintenance, steam turbines, condensers, cooling towers, air pollutants emitted from boilers, and air pollution control techniques. The course guidebook is a self-paced course, containing lesson goals and objectives, text, review exercises, and a final examination. After successfully completing the course, the student will receive 2.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
